Japan abounds in seasonal changes. Since old times, the Japanese have appreciated the transition of the four seasons that takes place during their lifetime. Sensitivity to the seasons and its influence on nature enriches our daily lives. On this page, we would like to introduce to you the Japanese seasonal festivals and customs and seasonal expressions such as Fubutsushi (a poetic expression where certain events or things are known to depict that particular feeling for the season in concern - for example, migrating birds "wataridori" which depicts a feeling of autumn).

[Christmas In Japan]

Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas Day, but in Japan Christmas has been treated as a calendar event for reasons other than for its religious implication. Over the passing years, Christmas in Japan has become more of a commercial event without its religious significance except for those Christians who celebrate it in church organizations. While most Japanese people tend to spend their time with their families during the New Year period, Christmas in Japan is often spent with friends or partners. In countries heavily influenced by the Christian faith, it is often the norm to witness church gatherings amongst families before enjoying either a family meal or having a party with friends.

On December 24, 1552, missionaries who visited Yamaguchi Prefecture invited Japanese believers to a Christmas celebration which was held at their parsonage. Together they sat up through the night, giving thanks to the God Deus. When Christmas morning arrived, the missionaries gave a mass and sermon to all the visitors, and this was followed by a Christmas meal. It is said that this particular event marked the beginning of Christmas celebration in Japan. In today¡Çs Japan, Christmas cake is known to be the only sweet that people consider having on a Christmas Day. This comes from the idea that since Christmas is a western custom, it should not be celebrated without the eye popping ornaments and gadgets familiar to the western way. Indeed, eating Christmas cake on Christmas day has entirely become a very common activity in Japan.

Therefore Hidemi would like to introduce various kinds of confectionery which are unique and can be served to celebrate any specific event of the year. In the hope that you will have a wonderful Christmas, we could assort the western items into Japanese. Please look forward to see upcoming ones.
